Lynnwood High School, Lynnwood, Washington

Lynnwood High School officially opened in September 1971. And I was in the first class of sophomores (10th graders) that went all three years and graduated from Lynnwood in 1974.

Because it was a brand-new school it was considered “state-of-the-art” and everything was all shiny and new. It was built on a lot across the street from what is now the HUGE Alderwood Mall and surrounding plazas. I remember thinking how cool it would be to go to the mall at lunch or after school, but due to years of delays by the developer, the mall did not open until 1979.

So there we were. Our brand new school. In the middle of nothingness.

But I loved school. I had friends that I still have today. I played and lettered in volleyball. We were the Lynnwood Royals and my senior year I got to cheer our teams on as a mascot – a jester – how perfect for me!

See the football field with “Royals” written on the field? We never did have a stadium and we played our football games at nearby Edmonds High School.

Ohhhh...just looking at that track makes me tired. It was President Kennedy’s Presidential Council on Physical Fitness and Sports that required a battery of tests – including a run around the track. The dreaded 440 yard dash. I made it, but I remember it was tough.

I don’t remember this sign. I guess we weren’t that bad in the 70’s. Although I do recall lighting a cigarette in the library one evening while cleaning up after the Honor Society initiation or something like that. And then throwing it in a garbage can and starting a small fire. Yes, I was a rascal at times. But I was still in Honor Society.

Last year I learned that Lynnwood High was going to be torn down and a new school built on a different property. The new school is complete and the tear down has begun. So Mike and I went to see what it looked like.

We saw this sign, but I couldn’t get any good pics without going through the gate that we weren’t supposed to go through. So we parked the truck and walked in. Shortly thereafter, a truck came by and escorted us off the property. Hmpff!

The school looked tired. And dirty.

And I don’t know what that big pile of stuff is. Part of history. My history. So long LHS.

Funny how our society is a "churn & burn" demolishing something that is only 40 years old. In the rest of the world buildings serve us for hundreds of years.....
What a waste of time and money.

Hi Tancho - Yes, Mike and I were just talking about how "young" the building was. Mike went to the same Phoenix high school that his mom went to. And my cousins' kids in Seattle went to the same high school that my mom went to - that's 3 generations!

With Lynnwood High it's all about the property value that brought it down. I think I heard that they could buy the new school property, build the new school and still have lot$ of money leftover from the proceeds of the sale from the original property. Look out for more retail next to Alderwood Mall!

Nice post. I have been thinking about you each morning as I walk to work past the old Atiyeh House. It seems strange that you are no longer there.

Hi Steve - Yes, "no longer there" - I wish I was working SOMEwhere! But nice, sunny days like today sorta make it hard to think about sitting inside an office all day...
