Baby Jesus Found in Salem!

It was over a year ago, when Mike, Sitka and I were still living in Mexico. I was teaching English to preschoolers and in early January 2009, I was the lucky teacher that found the Baby Jesus doll in my piece of the Rosca de Reyes, or King’s Cake.

(Take a moment to go to my old post and you’ll understand more about the King's Cake and the Baby Jesus.)

So for more than a year now Mike and I have taken turns hiding the Baby Jesus from each other and then laughing hard when we come across the Baby Jesus unexpectedly.

And yesterday Mike outdid himself in the game of hiding the Baby Jesus.

It was early afternoon, when out of the blue a floral delivery person showed up in my office. And she walked directly toward me with a beautiful spring bouquet of flowers tucked into a teapot – including a very fragrant stargazer lily, my favorite!

I thanked her and reached for the gift card. (Hehehehehe…of course, I knew the flowers had to be from Mike!) And then I started to laugh. Laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh!

Touché Mike. You done good. You got me. Now it's my turn...

Birdnests

A lot of our trees in Salem lose their leaves every fall and stand naked against the grey, cloudy skies of winter. And within the naked trees are the birdnests.

The results of the February Food Drive for the Oregon Employment Department are finally in:

We donated 253,652 pounds of food in 2010!

That many pounds of food provides a 3-to-5 day supply of food for 5,073 families in Oregon. Last year the Employment Department raised 200,932 pounds of food during the Food Drive - so we raised 52,720 more pounds this year than last year!!

Thank you to everyone who participated!

Food Drive Results

Here we have our Food Pyramid from last Friday. And yesterday one of the Board members brought in three more bags of groceries!

Over the weekend I added up the $$ donations and this morning Mike and I drove our food-stuffed truck to the Marion-Polk Food Share (food bank) to deliver our office donations for the 2010 Governor’s State Employees Food Drive.

And the GRAND TOTAL of our donation (after converting the $$ to pounds) is 2,111 pounds of food! Considering we have just 9 people in our office that works out to about 235 pounds of food per person!

Special thanks to friends Teresa and Cheryl who sent in $$ donations just because that’s how cool they are. And to Betty, Ron and Mike for their donations for the St. Valentine's Day Auction!
