We had planned out our route down I-5 though Oregon and California, taking a left at Palm Springs, heading to Phoenix, and then down to Nogales, AZ to cross into Mexico.
The Mexico route would then hit Guaymas on the Gulf of CA, run down the coast and cut into central Mexico and finally Mexico City (Distrito Federal – the capital of Mexico - known as DF.)
However, the managers of the school we’ll be teaching at suggested crossing the border at Laredo, TX. That leaves about 700 (11 or so hours) miles of travel through central Mexico. We checked out this route and it looks like the better way to go. Also, if you ever need to learn about the Mexico highway system and tolls go to the Secretaria de Comunicaciones y Transportes site and the Traza tu ruta link is a mapping/toll tool that provides information about highways, tolls, kilometers, and driving times.
See the Mapquest map going through Laredo @ http://www.mapquest.com/mq/10-Ee2svgjulVzHnmb17olS (scroll all the way down to see the map.)
If anyone else has any ideas or comments about the route, please post a comment or email us. Help make our trip as fun and safe as possible!

Good luck on starting this new part of your life. I have driven that stretch from Laredo to DF more than once. My wife is from Mexico City and we still have a condo there. I thought the drive from Dallas was long.... you have a journey. You can drive on the toll roads just about the entire way, unless you take some side trips. Monterrey is a beautiful, modern city... but you cannot tell unless you get off the toll road. It goes way around. One side trip I recommend is the city of Guanajuato. Beautiful colonial city with the famous mummies and the roads under the city. It is close enough for a weekend trip from Mexico city if you can't.
Ken
Mike & Cynthia,
What is your departure date? Best of luck & I look forward to following you via your blog!!! Love & hugs from Jackie & Kurt
Have a great trip. Sorry that we will not meet you on your way through; but your new route sounds easier for you.
Take care and have fun.
I am glad things are working out for you and Mike and very excited to know you will be on your journey to Mexico soon. I just read that the Red Hat Society has chapters in Mexico. I hope you can locate one. haha I wish you and Mike the best of Luck!

Thanks for the info, Ken.
We're leaving on 5/15, Jackie.
Guaymas is in our future, Brenda!
Tadddddd - I have my two RED HATS packed and I am ready to party!!!
Wow, May 15, only 12 days away! I've only done the Nogales thru Guaymas route, but probably the other one is better for going to MX City. You'll get to see a lot of Old Mexico, and even though you'll be wanting to just get to your new home, you can sort of mark off what you want to visit again. Have a wonderful trip!
